what is a Powered Mixer? ?

what does it exactly do? Is it for recording only? Can’t find any website with a detailed info.
A powered mixer is just that; it has it’s own independent Power Amp and need not be hooked to an “outboard” amp. They are often underpowered, so many go with the outboard amp route anyway, depending on use. A small studio setup usually doesn’t need more power than the board gives. But beware! cheap powered mixers often add hum and/or buzz to the audio signal. Also, for pro use, most mixers provide “phantom” power for microphones as well as Mic Pre-amps already built in.
